I was just sitting there....

....minding my own business, when I heard a shy knock on the door of the wine shack. I was open and the door was unlocked, so it was a bit unusual. I looked up, expecting yet another interruption from a wine flack pushing yet another unneeded, obnoxious, overproduced California wine, and saw this cute little hispanic woman who was pulling behind her an ice chest. Hm, whatever it was I had to find out. I opened the door and she shyly asked "Tamales?" Not sure I heard correctly I said "Excuse me?" She goes "Tamales. 6 for $5" Being constantly hungry...as well as curious...I of course said yes. Lo and behold.....
The dark wrappers are around beef with a fresh chili salsa, the lighter ones are chicken with green chili, and sorry to say to those who can't have them, they are the best f*cking tamales I have ever had! The fillings were excellent, moist and full of hot, mouth tingling flavor, and the masa was moist and not too dense. Door-to-door tamale salesmen....life just keeps getting better!!

Mmm... nothing like fresh tamales!!

For those that live in the South Bay area of the SF Bay, there is an awesome little Tamale stand in the parking lot of the grocery store next to the El Titanic restaurant on Winchester Ave near Hamilton.

Delicious, fresh, and sold by a "cut little hispanic woman".

The folks at El Titanic are quite nice, but the food is.... meh.

However, there is a rather large Taco stand that sets up outside their side door in the summer that slings a mean taco!!

6 for $5 is a great deal. Especially to support a poor woman peddling them door to door.

Dude, I hope she knocks on my door...or call me next time she's at the shop...I'll take Tamales over Arby's 5 for $5 anyday.

You didn't get a number by chance or tell her to come back again soon? I'd love to support some poor woman peddling the best tamales.

Doubt it's the same person, but I just bought from someone up on Alberta, working out of a cooler, same price.

This is the perfect opportunity for a twitter feed. Tamale fans all over Sellwood would rush to the wine shack for tamales!

bbum...thanks for the bay area tip. I'll be down there this weekend, but probably with not enough time to get over. but it is in the file.

wc...It is a crazy deal. she didn't show yesterday and I was quite disappointed.

josh...get me your number, my brother. happy to share the love!

gayle...I don't have a number for her. but wouldn't it be cool to have her make some for a big get-together?!

alan....probably is the same person. was it a blue cooler? they only work this neighborhood maybe once or twice a week.

anon....I have tweeted about this after the first time a few weeks ago! maybe turn her into the PDX version of the L.A. korean taco cart!!

OK. I'm slightly colorblind, but shouldn't be THAT colorblind. I can't remember the cooler color, but know it was on wheels. Also, I got "beggie" tamales and they were great.

I'm loving this tamale family. They've stopped by my shop once a week for the last month - usually on Sat. The daughter told me that the women at their church make all the tamales at their church and then the families spread out to sell thruout the city. Hauling that big cooler, by bus, all the way to Sellwood is commitment!
